Local Hero and Historian
enthralls Tooele Historical Society

September 13, 2004

John Skinner, a Local Hero and perhaps the ultimate authority on Tooele County's mines and mining towns, was the featured speaker at the Tooele County's Historical Society at the January 13 meeting. John was thrust into the limelight in September of 1989 when a young man became lost in a mine in the Oquirrh Mountains. John Skinner knew that mine. And many people believe that the lost ten-year-old was saved because of John's actions that September. For a complete article on the story Click Here

At Tuesdays evening's meeting John Skinner received rapt attention from the audience while he showed photographs of many local mines and miners, and displayed interesting (and valuable) tableware and bottles that he has recovered at local mine sites.

And, or course, John was kind enough to tell the story one-more-time of his involvement in the rescue of a ten-year-old in September of 1989. It was a worthwile evening for anyone interesting in Utah history.

The Tooele County Historical Society meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the old Tooele Library. For more information call Jay Del La Mare at 882-1469.

Next months meeting will feature Dennis McBride who is the third generation in his family to collect and displays antique automobiles. You are invited to attend.
